Partial Payment (also called Partial COD, upfront payment or deposit payment) lets a shopper pay a part of the order online at checkout and the balance when the parcel arrives. It sits between “pay everything now” and “pay everything on delivery”. In COD King it is controlled from Settings → Partial payments & COD, using payment rules. Each rule is one choice the shopper sees in the checkout popup, for example Pay in full and save 10%, Pay ₹100 now, rest on delivery or Cash on delivery.

How it works for a shopper

  1. The shopper taps your buy button and enters their details in the COD King popup.
  2. On the Pay via screen they see every payment rule that applies to their cart.
  3. They pick one. The upfront part is paid online; any balance is collected on delivery.
  4. The order lands in Shopify, and the balance is added to it (see Payment flow).

Why use Partial Payment

In cash-heavy markets, 100% COD tends to quietly bleed money:
  • Return-to-origin rates run high. Between 20% and 40% of fully-COD orders get refused at the door, and each one costs reverse logistics.
  • There is no real commitment. When nothing is paid upfront, ordering feels risk-free, which invites casual or accidental orders.
  • Shipping costs are lost either way. Forward shipping, return shipping and stock in transit are paid whether or not the order is kept.
  • Rejected parcels tie up stock for days or weeks.
Even a token deposit changes the psychology. Once someone has paid ₹99 or $2 upfront, the thought moves from “I’ll decide when it arrives” to “I’ve already committed”. Doorstep refusals drop sharply.
